It's reasonably safe to assume that your first question would be, what on earth is that thing? Simply put it's the outcome of an abstract design challenge presented as part of a University of Queensland design project.
As modern designers so often we rely completely on computers and new technology to solve problems. And there's nothing wrong with that, but every so often it's important to broaden our problem solving abilities, and find new ways of completing tasks.
Presented with the unique and abstract challenge of building two aliens that communicate back and forth, without any human intervention and minimal use of electronics (preferably no electronics) to drive the interaction. The project required that a team of four design and build a solution that met these strange requirements.
The primary outcome of this project was not the unusual finished product you see in the video. Rather it was the skills developed throughout the design process, working in such an abstract head space required very different thinking and resulted in new problem solving skills that didn't rely on a computers ability to produce a finished product.
